Selfless Heroes
Every year around 9/11, there are many posts and articles about the tragic events at the World Trade Center.
I found myself reading and watching many stories about the selfless heroes who gave of themselves for others that day.
The countless firefighters and first responders who went against the current, climbing up the World Trade Center buildings while everyone else was trying to get out, risking their own lives to save others.
The “Red Bandana” hero inside the WTC who saved many lives, the boat crews who came from all directions to help evacuate people from Manhattan, and the story of a guide dog who helped his blind companion make his way down the countless stairs to safety.
And there are many more stories, many of which may never have become public.
They could have chosen to go the other way and save themselves. Instead, they chose to help other human beings—many of them complete strangers.
That degree of courage is something I honor so deeply.
They were truly heroes—selfless, courageous, big-hearted human beings.
Would I have had the heart and courage to do what they did?
I get to wake up and live another day.
What am I doing for others?
I feel ashamed to admit that I do not do enough for others.
Even if I cannot be like these heroes,
I need to live more for others and do whatever I can, even in small ways, to help make this world a better place.
I am grateful that these stories continue to be shared. They remind us and teach us so many important things about life.
To every hero who went to Heaven while trying to save another life:
Thank you.
And we will never forget the love and courage you showed the world.

人々の命を救った勇敢なヒーローたち
毎年9月11日が近づくと、ワールドトレードセンターで起きた悲劇的な出来事について、たくさんの投稿や記事が出てきます。
自分を顧みず、他の人のために力を尽くした多くのヒーローたちについての記事や動画が、私の目に留まりました。
大勢の人々が建物から外へ逃げようとしている中、流れに逆らってワールドトレードセンターの建物を上り、自分の命を危険にさらしながら、他の人たちを救おうとした、数えきれないほどの消防士や救急隊員たちのストーリー。
WTCの中で多くの人の命を救った「レッド・バンダナ」のヒーロー、マンハッタンから人々を避難させるため、あらゆるところから駆けつけた船の乗組員たち、そして、目の見えない飼い主を助け、長い階段を下りて安全な場所まで導いた盲導犬の話など。
そして、きっとまだ世に知られていないお話も、たくさんあるのだと思います。
彼らは、自分自身の命を守るために逃げることもできました。
それでも、他の人を助けることを選びました。
その多くは、まったくの見知らぬ人だったのです。
彼らのこれほどの勇敢さと大きな愛に、心から敬意を表します。
自分を顧みず、勇気があり、心も愛もものすごく大きな、正真正銘のヒーローたちです。
「もし私だったら、彼らと同じことをする心と勇気があっただろうか？」
今日も目が覚め、新しい一日を生きることができている私は、「人のために、何をしているだろう？」
人のために十分なことができていない自分を、恥ずかしく思います。
彼らのようなヒーローにはなれなくても、
もっと人のために生きて、
そして、たとえ小さなことでも、自分にできることをして、この世界を少しでもより良い場所にしていきたいと思います。
人生について考えさせられ、私たちに大切なことを思い出させ、そして教えてくれる、こうしたお話が、これからも語り継がれていくことに感謝します。
人々の命を救い天国へ旅立ったすべてのヒーローたちへ。
ありがとうございます。
あなたたちが世界に示してくれた愛と勇気を、私たちは決して忘れません。

Héroes desinteresados
Cada año, alrededor del 11 de septiembre, se publican muchas historias y artículos sobre los trágicos acontecimientos ocurridos en el World Trade Center. Me encontré leyendo y viendo muchas historias sobre los héroes desinteresados que ese día dieron todo de sí mismos por los demás.
Los innumerables bomberos y socorristas que, en lugar de salir, avanzaron en dirección contraria, subiendo por los edificios del World Trade Center mientras todos los demás intentaban salir, arriesgando sus propias vidas para salvar a otros.
El héroe de la “Bandana Roja” dentro del WTC, que salvó muchas vidas; las tripulaciones de barcos que llegaron desde todas direcciones para ayudar a evacuar a las personas de Manhattan; y la historia de un perro guía que ayudó a su compañero ciego a bajar por las interminables escaleras hasta ponerse a salvo.
Y hay muchas más historias, muchas de las cuales quizá nunca hayan llegado a hacerse públicas.
Podrían haber elegido ir en la otra dirección y salvarse a sí mismos. En cambio, eligieron ayudar a otros seres humanos, muchos de ellos completos desconocidos.
Ese grado de valentía es algo que admiro profundamente.
Fueron verdaderamente héroes: seres humanos desinteresados, valientes y de gran corazón.
¿Habría tenido yo el corazón y el valor para hacer lo que ellos hicieron?
Tengo la oportunidad de despertar y vivir un día más.
¿Qué estoy haciendo por los demás?
Me da vergüenza admitir que no hago lo suficiente por los demás.
Aunque no pueda ser como estos héroes,
necesito vivir más para los demás y hacer todo lo que pueda, incluso con pequeños actos, para ayudar a hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor.
Estoy agradecida de que estas historias sigan compartiéndose. Nos recuerdan y nos enseñan tantas cosas sobre la vida.
A cada héroe que partió al Cielo mientras intentaba salvar la vida de otra persona:
Gracias.
Y nunca olvidaremos el amor y el valor que mostraron al mundo.
